INNOVATION IN SHOULDER AND ELBOW SURGERY

Dr. Joaquin Sanchez-Sotelo MD PhD is appointed as Consultant and Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Mayo Clinic, where he also serves as Chairman of the Division of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. Dr. Sanchez-Sotelo has published over 350 articles in the peer-reviewed literature in addition to over 50 book chapters. He is co-editor of the most widely read textbook on elbow surgery, “The Elbow and Its Disorders”. Dr. Sanchez-Sotelo has also published Mayo Clinic Principles of Shoulder Surgery. He is actively involved in the design of implants for joint replacement, shoulder sports medicine, and fracture fixation. Dr. Sanchez-Sotelo serves as course co-director for the Mayo Clinic Annual Elbow Course “Teach the teachers”, the Combined Harvard-Mayo Clinic Course on Shoulder Tendon Transfers and Complex Rotator Cuff Tears, the International Advanced Course on Elbow Surgery (IACES), and the FORE Critical Concepts in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Course. He has presented his research in numerous occasions at national and international meetings. He has been presented the Mayo Clinic Teacher of the Year Award on two separate occasions and has received other awards in the past, including the Mark B. Coventry, Melvin Post, MidAmerica Orthopedic Association, Knee Society, ISOLS 2019, ICSES 2019, AAOS Achievement’s Awards, Course Director for Best Mayo Clinic Course (2017 and 2021), and Digital Educator of the Year at Mayo Clinic 2021. In the past, Dr. Sanchez-Sotelo served as Board Member at large for the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES), and he was also recently selected as ASES Vice-President.

Professor Pascal Boileau was Chairman of the University Institute of Locomotion and Sports of Pasteur 2 Hospital and Chairman of its Department of Orthopedic and Sports Surgery from 1999 to November 2020, when he founded the ICR (Institut de Chirurgie Réparatrice Locomoteur & Sport/ Institute for Sports & Reconstructive Bone & Joint Surgery), within the Clinique Kantys Centre, a private clinic member of Groupe KANTYS, where he practices currently.

Professor Boileau specializes in shoulder surgery and is one of the designers of the Aequalis shoulder prostheses family and has developed several surgical devices and arthroscopy techniques. Professor Boileau has won several awards and prizes for his scientific work.
Professor Boileau has a wide-ranging scientific activity; he has more than 180 articles published in peer-re­reviewed journals, has edited 17 books, besides the more than 200 articles and chapters contributed to other publications.
Every two years he organizes the Nice Shoulder Course – Current Concepts, a meeting where internationally recognized experts share their knowledge, experience and views in the field of shoulder pathology and surgical treatment.

Speaker: S. O’Driscoll

Shawn O’Driscoll is Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, USA. He moved from Toronto, Canada to Rochester in 1992. He has an active shoulder and elbow surgical practice, clinical and basic science research program and for over 20 years, has been the Course Director of the Mayo Clinic, “Teach the Teachers” Advanced Surgical Skills Elbow Course.
Having completed his Ph.D. in 1984 under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Salter, he has been a pioneer in the field of tissue engineering as it pertains to cartilage repair. Currently, his clinical practice is focused exclusively on elbow and shoulder surgery and he has made numerous contributions in these areas which have been adopted worldwide. These include the Congruent Elbow Plating System, the Anatomic Radial Head prosthesis and the Latitude linkable Total Elbow Prosthesis. Dr. O’Driscoll has developed a step-wise safety-driven technique that has proven highly effective in reducing the incidence of iatrogenic nerve injury during elbow arthroscopy. He has also been a pioneer in elucidating the mechanisms of elbow fracture dislocation and elbow instability and he has devised a functional fracture classification system to guide the management of coronoid fractures.

RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT AND LEADERSHIP: A ROADMAP FOR INNOVATION

Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Lang Family Endowed Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery, Chief of Staff, Chief Academic and Innovations Officer Cleveland Clinic Florida.
Dr. Iannotti’s clinical and basic science research program focuses on innovative treatments for tendon repair and tendon tissue engineering, prosthetic design, software planning and patient specific instrumentation.
Dr. Iannotti has published three textbooks and has authored over 380 original peer reviewed articles, review articles and book chapters. He is a three-time recipient of Charles Neer Research Award, the Cleveland Clinic 2011 Sones Award for Innovation and Cleveland Clinic Life time Achievements Award for Innovation in 2019.
Dr. Iannotti holds approximately 120 US and International patents. In 2016 he was inducted into the National Academy of Inventors.
