ROME’S JEWISH QUARTER

Site of the former Jewish Ghetto, this area is nowadays a lovely neighbourhood within the city’s historic center. Built on the northern bank of the Tiber river and home to the main Synagogue in the city, it is currently known as the Jewish Quarter. Here, we will learn about the history of one of the oldest Jewish communities in Europe, dating back to Roman times, and how it unfolded within the neighbourhood. Today this is a vibrant area with a unique flavour, famous for its many excellent Kosher restaurants and Jewish owned businesses.

Our tour will also entail crossing the Tiber river, with a walk along the oldest roman bridge still in existence, and a visit to the only Island along the river course. Leaving behind the Ghetto, we will walk at the foot of Portico d’Ottavia, an ancient Roman site turned medieval fish market, and end our walk at the Theatre of Marcellus, an ancient open-air Roman theatre turned medieval fortress and palace.

ROME’S TRASTEVERE

One of the most iconic neighbourhoods in Rome, Trastevere offers the chance of visiting a completely different side of the city, and one of its most authentic still. The district, which lies on the right bank of the Tiber, has been inhabited since pre-roman times when it was considered to be in the outskirts of Rome, from where it grew to become part of the city in the Middle Ages. A former working-class neighbourhood, today Trastevere is one of the city’s most picturesque hangouts, home to many expats and foreign students, and yet retaining its unique identity. It is also famous for its bustling nightlife, and lining its cobblestone streets are many of Rome’s best restaurants and pizzerias, tucked away inside charming medieval buildings.
